There doesn't seem to be a CMOS reset jumper anywhere, so if you need to reset the firmware settings you have to pull the CMOS battery for 30 seconds or so. Unfortunately the battery is on the back side of the mainboard under the fan, so you have to take out basically every part in the entire machine to get to it (though fortunately not the heatsink itself, so you don't have to re-paste the CPU).

Kitty Media previously had a dedicated site at kittymedia.com, but they lost their domain to a squatter in spring 2014. According to Media Blasters reps we met at Fanime Con 2015 they moved their email to the domain for Fever Dreams, their production arm for original works. We tried contacting John Sirabella at <jsirabellafever-dreams.com> in 2015 without success. We met a professional acquaintance of Mr. Sirabella's at Kraken Con Spring 2016 who gave us his current email address <jsirabellamedia-blasters.com>.
Theme Choosing
Themes are chosen at the last meeting of the year before the con. This way we can announce the theme for the following year during closing ceremonies.

All staff may suggest themes for the following year and the suggestions are voted on by the staff present at the meeting. Generally, the staff may vote on as many themes as they want (with a limit of once per theme) until the theme choice is narrowed down to just a few, and then everyone has to vote on their final choice.

Themes are disqualified if the convention has ever used it, or if a nearby convention has used it in the last 10 years or will be using it in an upcoming year (to our knowledge). Additionally, since there is a local annual SteamPunk event, Steampunk is also disqualified as an option.
Possible Future Themes
* Heroes vs. Villains
*Math
*History
*Superheroes
*Holidays
*Isekai
*Deja-Vu / Omniverse (probably for an anniversary year)
*Video Games
*Underground
*Travel
Please feel free to add your suggestions to this list and we can use it as a jumping off point for next year's voting choices.
Known Disqualified Themes
* Bees (permanent chair veto)
*80's (BLFC 2014)
*"Aloha" (Kraken Con S2016)
* Gaming (Fanime 2018)
* Tabletop Gaming (BLFC 2019)
Additionally, any theme we have had is disqualified.
Departmental Impact
The theme primarily affects the Design team.

Video Programming is encouraged to work within theme as much as possible but is not limited by theme.

Cosplay may have theme related awards in the masquerade.

All departments and staff are encouraged to do something theme related.

Upper staff and staff who have a need for it will receive @snafucon.com email addresses. Many departments also have shared email addresses, which are handled through RT.

How To
Log In
Log in to your email here: mail.snafucon.com
Change Your Password
Log in at mail.snafucon.com, click "Settings" in the left bar, then click "Password".

If you've forgotten your current password, ping @Admin in Discord and they can reset it for you.

Setting Your Name and Signature
#Log In
#Click "Settings" in the left navigation bar.
#Click "Identities" In the left column.
#Choose what identity you want to add a signature for (see below)
#Make sure that "Bcc" is set to "records@snafucon.com"
#Click "Save"
Add More Identities
Identities allow you to send as department emails. If you are in the registration department you should set up a "Registration" Identity and if you are in Rovers you should set up a "Rovers" identity, etc.

You can set up as many identities as you want but you must have permissions set to email out from a departmental email or it simply won't work. If you are unsure as to whether you have the necessary permissions, contact the admin.

#Click "Settings" in the left navigation bar.
#Click "Identities" In the left column.
#Click the "+" at the top of the right column.
#Set your Name, Email, and Signature

For Example:

<pre>Display Name: SNAFU Con Registration
Messages which the filter thinks are spam will be delivered to your "spam" folder, which is nested inside your inbox. (No, we don't know why, and no, we can't change that. It's just a quirk of our mail provider.)

If you receive a spam message in your Inbox, move it to the spam folder. Doing so will help to train the spam filter to do a better job recognizing spam. There isn't a dedicated button for that, unfortunately. You have to drag and drop it or use "Move" in the "More" menu.

Likewise, if you find a message in your spam folder which is not spam, please help train the filter by moving the message to your inbox.
SCIENCE owns a set of 11 Dell Latitude E5540 laptops. These were acquired from ComputerCorps in Carson city on 14 September 2023 for $1250.

2023 OS Setup
For 2023 we're using Lubuntu. To install our "standard" setup:

# Download the Lubuntu 22.04 ISO and write it to a USB drive (e.g. with Rufus)
# Copy the bacondevd DEB package on to the USB drive
# Boot the computer from your USB drive
# Connect to a network, ideally the "SNAFU Con Staff" WiFi network. If you connect to a different network now you'll need to add the connection info for "SNAFU Con Staff" later.
# Run the installer on the desktop.
## Accept the defaults for everything that has them.
## On the disk screen, select "Erase disk"
## On the user screen:
### User name: snafucon
### Hostname: set to snafucon plus the asset tag number, e.g. "snafucon-401332"
### Password: use the standard laptops/tablets one
### Check the "automatically log in" box
# When the installer is done, reboot and remove the USB drive when it tells you to.
# When it's done booting into the new OS, it should prompt you to install updates. Do that. If it doesn't ask, click "Preferences -> Apply Full Upgrade" in the start menu.

Sammich: add reassembly and cleaning instructions

We have two large-format laminating machines from Apache: an 18" capacity AL18P and and a 13" capacity AL13P.

The AL13P has been out of commission since 2019 with a cracked quartz heating element tube. We bought the AL18P in 2021 to replace it.

Disassembly
This procedure is written based on the AL18P but should be nearly identical for the AL13P.

For disassembly you pretty much only need a #2 Phillips screwdriver.

Warning
When it's plugged in, the inside of the machine contains exposed mains voltage. Do not plug in the machine with its white top cover removed unless you have been trained how to safely service mains-powered equipment.

The entire central roller assembly gets very hot in operation. Ensure that the machine has fully cooled before attempting disassembly.

Remove the Top Cover
Remove the gray cover over the rollers. It just lifts up and off.

Turn the machine over and remove the outermost four screws on the bottom (labelled "Cover" here). Don't remove any other screws - you don't need to and things will come loose inside, which will make it harder to reassemble later.

Carefully turn the machine back over - the white top cover is no longer attached to the black base, so you'll have to hold them together while you flip it.

Remove the screws on either side of the display. It will fall inwards. For reassembly you'll need to lift the white cover slightly and hold the display up from the inside to reinstall the screws.

Lift off the white top cover and set it aside. You may have to tilt it backwards slightly to clear the back rollers. If there are badges stuck through the slot in the cover and into the rollers it may take quite a bit of force to pull the cover off past them; just make sure that you're only applying force to the stuck badges and not to the rollers.

Removing the Rollers
The rollers are held in place and tensioned by four spring-loaded clamps, one at each corner of the roller assembly.

Hang one end of the machine at a time over the edge of the table so you can reach the roller clamp screws on the bottom of the machine without turning it over. Loosen the clamp screws until the rectangular nuts are right at the end of the screws as shown here.

Remove the small screw at each end of the upper heating element shield (the long silvery galvanized metal object between the rollers above) and lift the upper heating element in its shield up and out of the way.

One at a time, pull each of the four roller clamps up as far as it will go and then slide it along its long axis away from the roller assembly. It should stay attached to the base plate; if you remove the nut from the screw it's more annoying to reassemble.

Once all four clamps have been removed, you can lift the rollers straight up and out of their channels. This will reveal the bottom heating element behind the bottom front roller.

Re-Installing the Rollers
The rollers with single-slot bushings and two gears go on the bottom of each side. The two bottom rollers are identical, so it doesn't matter if you swap them front-to-back. The side with the larger gear faces towards and engages with the motor. The sheet metal roller brackets should fit into the groove in the bushing.

The rollers with dual-slot bushings and one gear go on the top of each side. The two top rollers are identical, so it doesn't matter if you swap them front-to-back. The side with the gear faces away from the motor and engages with the matching gear on the bottom roller. The sheet metal roller brackets should fit into the inner groove in the bushing.

Once all four rollers are in place and the brackets are in the correct slots in their bushings, reinstall the roller clamps one-by-one. Lift the clamp up as far as it will go, align it with the outer groove in the top bushing, and push it along its long axis to slide it into the groove in the bushing until it engages with the notch in the clamp.

Hang one end of the machine at a time over the edge of the table so you can reach the roller clamp screws on the bottom of the machine without turning it over. Tighten the clamp screws until the rectangular nut roughly lines up with the notch in the clamp.

Swing the top heating element in its shield back down into place and install its two screws. Ensure that the flange with the screw hole at each end of the shield is on the outside of the roller bracket.

Cleaning
You'll need isopropyl alcohol, paper towels, and possibly a soft brush like a toothbrush and some kind of scraping tool.

Clean each of the rollers by rubbing it with isopropyl alcohol on a paper towel. Don't use abrasive cleaners or scraping tools on the rollers - they're very easy to nick, which will prevent the nicked area from laminating properly. IPA should be enough to un-stick badge adhesive or plastic that's stuck to the surface, but it can take quite a bit of rubbing. If you need to remove a badge that's wrapped around the rollers that you can't just peel off, cut it loose very carefully with scissors or a sharp blade, taking care not to cut the surface of the roller.

Inspect both heating elements for foreign material and damage.

If the element has burned-on debris like this, clean it off as best you can and then burn off the rest as described below. You can use a scraping tool like a flathead screwdriver to scrape off anything stuck to the metal shield, but be careful not to hit the quartz tube inside: they crack easily. To clean the quartz tube, use IPA with a soft brush or a paper towel. You probably won't be able to get everything off, but the more you get off now the less smoke you'll make burning it off. You should at least try to get any large chunks of plastic off.

If the quartz element tube is cracked or broken, the laminating machine cannot be safely operated until the element is replaced. Reassemble the machine and prominently label it "Broken - Do Not Use".

Burning off Debris
If the heating element has burned-on residue as shown above, even if you clean most of it off the machine will most likely emit some smoke the next time it's turned on, so that needs to be done under safe conditions.

Fully re-assemble the machine, but don't tension the rollers.

Take the machine to a well-ventilated outdoor area away from people and plug it in. Turn it up to its highest temperature setting and leave it until a little while after it stops smoking.

Unplug it and wait for it to fully cool before proceeding.

Disassemble it again and clean the smoke residue out of the interior with IPA. Make sure to clean all of the rollers, as well as the inside of the sheet guide between the heating elements.

Every year, we have a spreadsheet in Google Docs to help us make sure that we're on target for getting enough rooms to meet our minimums and reconcile hotel-provided delegate lists with digital records provided by hotel reservation services.

We need to perform this reconciliation because the GSR allows for people to book online or by phone. BACON has a system built in that allows people who book online through the links we provide to automatically get VIP status. We can also login to the GSR's online booking system, Passkey, to pull a list of all the people who booked through their online system, even if they did not go through our links. However, Passkey cannot give us a list of people who booked by phone. For this, we need the "delegate list": a complete list of all of people who book rooms and then we need to reconcile it against the records from Passkey.
Creating the Spreadsheet for a New Year
#As the SCIENCE records Google account, copy last year's sheet and share with the same people
#On the Prices sheet, update the 100% room-night target and the price schedule
#On the Previous Year Comparison sheet, archive the old year:
##Move the chart out of your way so you can see columns A-G
##Select columns B-D, right-click the column header, and select "Insert 3 right"
## Select columns B-D and press Ctrl+C. Select cell E1 and press Ctrl-V, then click the paste popup and choose "values only". Do the same thing again but choose "format only". This gives you a copy of the previous year with static values instead of the formulas.
##Update the header in cells B1 and D3 to the current year
##Set the last cell in column B to the date of the Wednesday before con this year, then fill upwards with earlier dates
##Move the chart back to the top left
##Double-click the chart
###in the side panel click "Setup",
###Add G3:G203 to the data range list between D and J (You can type it into the text box or click the little grid to see a nicer looking interface)
###Under "Series", click "Add Series" and choose the prior year which is now missing from the chart
#On the Master Account sheet, delete all the data - leave the headers and formulas (gray cells)
# On the Passkey sheet, delete all the data - leave the headers and formulas (gray cells)
#On the Phone sheet, delete all the data - leave the headers and formulas (gray cells)
