Press kits can be extremely cheap to put together and make us as a con look extraordinarily professional. This kit should be handed out at the press orientation, and each person who has applied for a press badge should receive one. When the members of the press receive their press badges, they will not receive a standard registration bag – they will receive theirs at their orientation, which includes a standard reg bag setup.
It is extremely important that press kit budget requests be made around July so that those involved in purchasing can take advantage of back-to-school sales if it is more cost-effective.
Press Kit contents
Each press kit should be in a folder with pockets, cardboard or plastic. These folders need to have a business card insert in at least one pocket, if possible. The folder should be labeled in some way – either via a printed label that indicates the folder is a SNAFU Con press kit, or if we can ever afford it, we could get custom-printed folders.
Each press kit should contain one of the following:
- The press liaison’s business card, so members of the press can contact them if they have questions. This should be inserted into the business card insert.
- A SNAFU Con con book and schedule.
- A generic Press Release, properly formatted, with the SNAFU Con logo at the top of it.
- A “press rules” sheet.
- A quick-facts sheet about the convention.
Optional items:
- A reiteration of the behavior policies, because there is a good chance members of the press will not actually read their con books.
- A quick-sheet of panel highlights from previous years. Try and keep it PG-13.
- A CD (labeled “Digital media kit”) containing digital versions of all of the above items in PDF format, as well as a hi-res and low-res versions of the SNAFU Con logo, digital promo pictures, and digital versions of the con book pictures of our special guests, labeled by name. This CD should, obviously, be put into a CD sleeve of some sort.
- Any cheap swag we have to offer, such as promo buttons or stickers. You would be surprised how much free cheap stuff endears us to members of the press. These can be put into the actual folders if the items are flat enough; otherwise, you could place it in the con bag, which the press kit is placed into.
