Determine annual cosplay theme ribbons

Process

It's a collaborative brainstorming and selection process amongst the cosplay staff, informed by the con's theme, to create fun custom ribbons each year.

  1. The cosplay department will brainstorm list of potential ribbon names that fit with the convention's overall theme for that year. This is often brought in a con-wide staff meeting to tap into the creativity of the staff as a whole.
  2. A consolidated list is posted to the cosplay staff chat to get input and feedback from the rest of the team. Cosplay staff will discuss the options, providing opinions on which ones they prefer and why. They may suggest additional ideas as well.
  3. Once a consensus front-runner emerges, the cosplay head will finalize the selection and confirm that choice with the staff.
  4. Considerations when picking the ribbon text include:
    • How well it fits the theme
    • Uniqueness - standing out from past years
    • Pop culture references
    • Cosplay-related terms and ideas
    • Short, punchy text that looks good when printed
  5. After the ribbon text is decided, the cosplay head communicated the choice to the person who places the order to get them printed in time for the convention. The person who places the order is usually Beta, but depending on availability could be the cosplay head or another staff member with a company credit card
  6. Samples are shown to the staff to get approval before the full print run.
  7. The finished ribbons are handed out to qualifying cosplayers throughout the convention weekend.

Notes

  • Ribbons are 3" wide to fit our badges, and are normally 3" x 1 5/8"
  • Ribbon text should be short and punchy due to the dimensions of the ribbons.
  • They gave us a fun font in 2018. I bet if we wanted to choose a font, we could.
